Social Accountability

Social accountability is the power of the people in governance. It is an impactful approach to an old problem - how can the the government be more accountable for its policy and implementation? This has consequence for matters ranging from delay of wages in rural livelihood programmes like MGNREGS year after year or why classrooms do not have teachers. Since 2008, our research has sought to find answers to pressing questions on citizen participation in governance. We have provided methodologies and resource materials on social accountability tools; evidence from public expenditure tracking surveys; created learning avenues for civil society organisations and citizens to engage on these issues. All our efforts are directed to changing the basic design of public institutions so that accountability becomes their key feature, which cannot be achieved without an informed and mobilised citizenry.
