Senior Researcher: Lead Public Finance

Avani lead's AI research in Public Finance. The key focus of her work has been in building evidence for policy advocacy to improve transparency and accountability in public financial management. Her most recent work focusses on research to understand the implications of the 14th Finance Commission on social sector spending. As part of her work, she is leading research studies on health, sanitation and education financing. She has also been anchoring the publication of the annual budget brief series tracking key social sector schemes. Between 2010-2013, she acted as the Operations Manager of the PAISA Project, responsible for managing the project’s activities including designing and undertaking large scale expenditure tracking surveys, data analysis and coordinating across various stakeholders and across the 7 PAISA states. Before AI, she worked at the Centre for Development and Human Rights (CDHR), with Dr. Arjun Sengupta, on issues of extreme poverty and the right to development. Avani has an M.Sc.in Development Studies from the London School of Economics, U.K and a B.A cum laude from Smith College, Massachusetts, USA.
