How much did the allocations increase from last year’s estimates? Has there been a significant change in the budget of any scheme? How much did the government actually spend on public welfare? Understanding and accurately reporting budget numbers is a difficult task.

To enhance the transparency and accountability of the Union Budget, we are organizing a workshop for all journalists who want to write about the Union Budget 2023 with greater depth and nuance.

We are a research group that has analyzed budgets – trends in allocations, public expenditure, outputs and outcomes of major social sector programs – through Budget Briefs for the past 14 years. Therefore, we have extensive experience in reading the Union Budget, which is a key indicator of the country’s welfare priorities through the use of public funds in a given financial year.
